图片显示出麒麟座变星V838在2002年5月20日、9月2日、10月28日和12月17日的不同状况。　照片中显示，V838 Mon的周围有个正在扩张的云气壳，可能在这颗星前一阶段的演化里，它曾拋出许多层以前没有注意到物质气壳，而现在看到的云气团，可能是因为反射星光，因而显现它们踪迹的云气，这些气壳不停地反射爆发中的V838 Mon星光。现在直径约有数光分的气壳，让天文学家很机会去探讨这颗不寻常恒星过去的行为。

爱斯基摩人有一句谚语“地狱是寒冷而非炙热的”。现在，美国国家航空航天局(NASA)及欧洲的天文学家们已经得到了“爱斯基摩地狱”的图片———哈勃望远镜发现了迄今为止宇宙中最冷的地方。这个地方位于人马座，距离地球5000光年，名叫“回飞棒星云”，是一团由正在死亡的恒星排出的气体。人类迄今为止所了解的宇宙中，绝大多数星云的温度都高过其背景温度，即宇宙大爆炸以来的零下270摄氏度；而这一星云的温度则低至零下272摄氏度，只比理论上的最低温度——连原子也会停止活动的绝对零度——高1摄氏度。
