云岗石窟位于山西水同市西北的武州山北崖上，是我国三大石窟之一。距今已有一千五百多年的历史，现存主要洞窟53个，大小造像五万一千多躯。
云岗石窟创建于公元450年，魏孝文帝令沙门统昙曜(音坛耀)开凿5个大石窟（第16-20窟），后人称为昙曜五窟。最大的是第6窟（魏孝文帝时开凿），由地面到窟顶高达20公尺，中央直立一个宽约60平方米的大塔柱，上连窟顶，整个塔柱和洞壁嵌满了大小佛龛和多种装饰，找不出一块没有雕刻的空隙。云岗石窟大部分是魏孝文帝迁都洛阳以前的作品。佛像的形状一般是厚唇、高鼻、长目、宽肩，有雄健的气概，体貌表现了少数民族的特征。
大佛像高大雄伟，显示举世独尊，无可对比的气概。其它石像，各按品极一个低似一个，全体服从大佛像。再配上飞天和侏儒，为大佛服役。飞天手执乐器，飞舞天空，表示在大佛庇荫下服役的愉快。
侏懦身形矮小，躯干健壮，雕刻在龛基、座础、梁下、柱顶等处，用力举重物，神情仍甚欢喜，表示为大佛服重役是快乐事。大佛象征皇帝，其它各级石像是大小群臣，飞天侏儒是各种服役的奴隶和民众。
