<P>相信每一个人都也遇过一个扫兴的经验，就是在错误的时间去到人家里。人家已吃完晚饭，连碗都洗干净了；或是吃饭吃到一半，但根本没有准备你的份儿，但是主人见你一场来到就要为你再准备一份晚餐，这时候，你就要赶快很客气地说：“请不用麻烦了。”</P>

A：Shall I get you something to drink?
B：Oh, no. Please don’t bother. I won’t take long.
A：How about a cup of coffee? I was just getting myself some.
B：OK. Thanks. I’ll join you, then. </P>
<P>甲：我拿点东西给你喝好不好？
乙：噢，不用了，不要麻烦，我不会逗留太久的。
甲：喝一杯咖啡怎样？ 我正准备要喝一些。
乙：好吧，谢谢。那我就跟你一起喝。 </P>
<P>如果主人热情地要为你准备晚餐，而你又真的饿坏了，那时候你就可以说： "Only if it’s not a bother." 就是“希望不会太麻烦你。”所以有时候我们到别人的家拜访，你担心会妨碍到别人做事，你可以说："I hope I’m not disturbing you."或是"I hope I’m not bothering you."“我希望没有打扰你们。”</P>
<P>主人问Shall I get you something to drink ? 客人回答 No, thank you. Please don’t bother. 等于说“谢谢，不要麻烦了。” Bother解作“费力（做一些事）”，多用于否定句，例如：Don’t bother to shut the window; it won’t rain. （不用麻烦把窗关上，不会下雨的。）口语还往往用bother表示不耐烦，例如：Oh, bother!（啊，真麻烦！） </P>

Would you like something to drink ?
<P>还记得小时候家里有客人来，爸爸、妈妈就会二话不说端出一杯茶来说：“请喝茶。”现代人的选择愈来愈多，可能你家里准备了很多果汁、咖啡、茶和啤酒。这时候你就可以问客人："Would you like something to drink?" </P><P>"Would you like something to drink?" 是一个非常有礼貌而且正式的用法。 无论对长辈或晚辈都绝对不会错，但如果来的朋友是你的同学或非常熟悉的邻居，你还可以问他说："How about something to drink?" 但是如果你家里的冰箱根本什么也没有，你只有热水可以泡个热咖啡，你就可以问他说："Would you like a cup of coffee?" 或是你的冰箱只有几瓶啤酒，你也可以问他说："Would you like a beer?" </P><P>对话
A：Would you like something to drink?
B：Yes, please.
A：What would you like? I have beer, coke and orange juice.
B：Mmm...May I have some beer?
A：Sure. Let me get it.
甲：你想喝点东面吗 ﹖
乙：好，麻烦你。
甲：你想喝甚么呢？我有啤酒、可乐和橙汁。
乙：嗯……我可以要点啤酒吗？
甲:当然可以，让我去拿来。 </P><P>你去拜访朋友，他问：Would you like something to drink ?（喝些东西好吗?）
你想喝就可以说：Yes, please. 或 I’d like it very much, please.（好啊，谢谢。）然后可以讲出想喝什么：May I have a beer?（给我一杯啤酒好吗?）但假如你不想喝，则可以说：No, thank you, not this time.（谢谢，不喝了，这次不喝了。）或Oh, no, please don’t bother.（谢谢，不喝了，别麻烦了。） </P><P>留意May I have a beer? 的May字。这个字常用来征求人家许可，例如：May I shut the window?（我把窗关上好吗?）这个意思的May可用Can或Could取代。May是最正式的说法，Can语气比较随便，Could则比Can客气一点。
假如朋友问：How about a cup of coffee?（喝杯咖啡好吗?）这How about....?有“提议”含义，可以改为What about ....? 意思完全相同，例如：What / How about a drink, Tom?（汤姆，喝一杯好吗?）
另一些“提议”的说法是What do you say to ....? 和Would you care for ....?
这两个句式之后都要用名词，例如Would you care for / What do you say to a cup of coffee ?（喝一杯咖啡好吗?）假如你想喝可以说：That’s a very good idea. 或 Good idea.（好主意。）；假如你想喝另一些东西，可用would rather (宁愿) 二字来说：Well, I’d rather have a cup of tea, if you don’t mind. （啊，不喝咖啡，喝杯茶好不好?）句末的if you don’t mind无非客气话，直译是“假如你不介意”。 </P><P>作者：古德明（香港）</P>
<P>thank you waiwai, I am sorry for not examine whole text, I just checked it in a glance while transfer this file, I will pay more attention to do so at next time. I supposed that if you advise it by English, you could got more challenge from this. what do you think so?</P>
<P>I am sorry, waiwai, I could not explain it to you, of cause, it should be "get" which will follow up "could" in general grammar , but in my practise, I would like to use "got", I do not know why , cos now English is my working language, I do not mention this long ago. </P>

a．除去的和非除去的是同类事物，用except
eg：
All the essays are well written except Nelson's.
Nelson的文章（除去的）和All the essays（非除去的）是同类事物，所以用except．
b．除去的和非除去的不是同类事物，用except for，并且从语气上通常表示遗憾．
eg：His essay is well written except for a few spelling mistakes.
a few spelling mistakes(除去的）和His essay（非除去的）是不同类的事物．
（３）apart from 具有多重意义：既可表示besides，也可以表示exept或exept for，还可以表示without的意思
eg：
Apart from the cost,it will take a lot of time.(=besides)
The orphan had no one to take care of him apart from his uncle.(=except)
He has done good work,apart from a few slight faults.(=except for)
There can be no knowledge apart from practice.实践出真知．（＝without）
（４）excepting =except,但一般用于句首或用于not，without，always等词之后
eg:
Excepting his brother,they are all right.
Everyone,not excepting myself,must share the blame.
All of us,without excepting those who know more about the subject,should study.
All my brothers com here every day,always excepting the youngest.
（５）but与except同义，但but多用在every，any，no等和由这些词构成的复合词如everything，anywhere，nobody等词以后及all，none之后
eg：
The children go to school everyday but Sunday.
They are all gone but me.
You can get the book anywhere but here.
There is no one but me.

We’d like to invite you to dinner. <P>在放假的时候，如果你不想出门，而想做几道小菜请你的朋友和同学来家吃饭，你可怎样开口邀请呢？你可以说："We’d like to invite you to dinner." 如果这句话的句尾并没有加上一个特定的地点，就表示我要请你到我家吃饭。 </P><P>对话
A：I wonder if you’re free on the evening of May 5th?
B：Yes, I believe so.
A：Good. We’d like to invite you and Jack to dinner.
B：Oh, thank you very much. We’d be delighted.
甲：请问你五月五日的晚上有空吗？

这句话有一点值得留意：the evening之前用介词on。 我们常常看到evening和介词in连用，例如：He enjoys watching television in the evening. (他喜欢晚上看电视。) 究竟in、on两个系词怎么用？ </P><P>按in the evening等于‘在晚上’，不说明是哪一天的晚上；假如要说明，则须用on，例如：(1) He enjoys watching television on Saturday evenings.（他喜欢星期六晚上看电视。）
(2) He watched television on the evening of May 5th.（他五月五日晚上看电视。）
此外还有两点值得留意：第一，假如日期是用on带出而不是of， the evening之前须用in，例如He watched television in the evening on May 5th.；第二，evening之前假如用 this、that、tomorrow、yesterday、every等字，就不用介词，例如：I’ll see him tomorrow evening.（我明天晚上会见到他。） </P><P>最后不妨谈谈日期的说法和写法。五月五日口头上一般会说the fifth of May， 美式英语也说May fifth。书面上则可写5(th) May, 2003或May 5(th), 2003， 日子之后加st、nd、rd、th等，是较旧式的写法。有时，年月日会一律用阿拉伯数目字写出，但这容易引起误会，因为英式写法是日/月/年，美式则是月/日/年，所以6/5/2003是五月六日还是六月五日，颇难断定。</P><P>作者：古德明（香港） </P>
