向人家借电话用，千万不要照中文直译做May I borrow your phone? 中文的 ‘借’和英文的borrow并不完全同义。 一般来说，可以拿走暂用的东西才可以borrow，例如：Can I borrow your car to go to the shops? Mine has broken down.（我的汽车坏了，可以借你的去买东西吗？）
不能拿走或移动的东西，例如电话、计算机、盥洗室以至办公室等，假如是免费借给你用的，英文可不能用borrow一字，只能说use，例如：Can we have the use of your conference room? We don’t have one. (我们没有会议室，可以借你们的一用吗？）把have the use of 改为borrow，就会惹人笑话。而人家答应借给你，也只能说：They let you use it. 不能说：They lend it to you.
当然，假如你把电话、计算机等拿走，稍后才还给人家，那就可以说borrow somebody’s phone / computer.，但这个‘借’和一般的 ‘借用’不同。 答应借电话等给人家用，除了说Sure.，还可以说：Certainly.、Of course. 或By all means.，意思都是‘当然可以。’此外，还可说：Be my guest. 或 Help yourself.，意思是‘请便’，例如："Do you mind if I use your phone / computer?"
